Sydney Sweeney’s New Sports Ad Sparks Major Controversy

Sydney Sweeney has found herself at the center of a new advertising controversy after appearing in a provocative campaign for sports prediction company Novig.

The advertisement features the Hollywood actress posing with equipment from various sports, including tennis, basketball, baseball and football, while wearing little or no clothing. The campaign has quickly attracted millions of views online — but it has also triggered strong criticism from female athletes.

Several prominent athletes argue that the campaign sexualizes women in sport and shifts attention away from athletic ability, dedication and achievement. Four-time Olympic swimming champion Ariarne Titmus was among the most vocal critics, saying the advertisement was disrespectful to women who have spent years training and competing at the highest level.

British sprinter Amy Hunt also responded to the controversy following her 200-metre final at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest. After finishing fourth, she highlighted the physical effort behind elite sport, pointing to the muscles, hard work and sacrifices of female athletes.

Other athletes, including Olympic cycling champion Sophie Capewell and gymnast Gracie Kramer, joined the discussion on social media. Some posted videos of themselves training and competing under messages emphasizing what women in sport actually look like.

Sweeney has not issued a lengthy public statement directly addressing the criticism. However, she shared photographs from ESPN’s Body Issue featuring prominent athletes who have previously posed nude, including Serena Williams and Ronda Rousey.

Novig has defended the campaign and its creative approach, while the controversy continues to generate discussion about advertising, sexuality and the representation of women in sport.

For Sweeney, the campaign is another example of how a celebrity advertisement can quickly become a global cultural debate — and once again places the actress at the center of intense online attention.
