Forint Hits Three-Year High

The exchange rate may be significantly influenced by the steps the new government takes to restore fiscal stability.

The Hungarian forint strengthened to 368.06 against the euro after Viktor Orbán conceded defeat to the Tisza Party. This represents a 1.7% appreciation compared to the evening level, and marks the strongest level of the Hungarian currency since June 2023.

However, one analyst noted that beyond Hungary’s election results, the forint’s exchange rate will also depend heavily on whether a peace agreement can be reached involving Iran. Longer-term prospects will also be shaped by the first decisions of the new Hungarian government specifically, what kind of fiscal consolidation measures it plans to implement.
