25 Years Since the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

September 11, 2026 marks 25 years since one of the darkest days in modern history: the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, commonly known as 9/11.

On that morning, 19 terrorists associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger planes. Two of the aircraft were deliberately flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, while a fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to take control of the plane.

The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and shocked the world. The images of the burning towers, the enormous clouds of smoke and the collapse of the World Trade Center became symbols of a tragedy that changed international politics and security forever.

In the years that followed, the United States launched the so-called “War on Terror.” American forces invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 in an effort to remove the Taliban regime and destroy al-Qaeda’s presence in the country. The attacks also led to major changes in airport security, intelligence cooperation and counterterrorism policies around the world.

Twenty-five years later, the memory of 9/11 remains deeply painful for survivors, families of victims and first responders. Memorial ceremonies are held every year in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania to honor those who lost their lives.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York has become an important place of remembrance. The names of the victims are inscribed around the memorial pools where the Twin Towers once stood.

For a new generation that was not yet born in 2001, September 11 is increasingly something learned through history books, photographs and documentaries. Yet its impact continues to shape the world they live in.

Twenty-five years after the attacks, 9/11 remains a powerful reminder of the human cost of terrorism and the lasting consequences of a single day that changed history.
