According to Ágnes Forsthoffer, a comprehensive review of Hungary’s asset declaration system is essential, as it has become increasingly clear that the current framework “served the interests of a government with a vested interest in corruption.”
In a Facebook post, the Speaker of the National Assembly stated that the asset declaration requirements set out in the law are inadequate for determining an individual’s financial situation or tracking the growth of their wealth. He argued that the information requested is outdated and incomplete, making year to year comparisons impossible and failing to ensure genuine transparency.
Forsthoffer believes that reforming the system is indispensable not only for increasing transparency and safeguarding the integrity of public life, but also for meeting the conditions required to unlock European Union funding for Hungary. She said that the Tisza Party is committed to implementing the necessary changes within the prescribed timeframe so that the next round of asset declarations, due by January 30, 2027, can be submitted under a new system.
The shortcomings of the parliamentary asset declaration system are perhaps best illustrated by the fact that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reported savings of only 5 million forints last year, despite receiving a prime ministerial salary worth several million forints per month.
