Hungary has a rich football history and has played many unforgettable matches outside its borders. The Hungarian national team, especially the legendary “Golden Team” of the 1950s, amazed football fans around the world with its skill, teamwork, and attacking style. One of the most famous matches was played on November 25, 1953, at Wembley Stadium in London. Hungary defeated England 6–3 in what became known as the “Match of the Century.” It was the first time England had ever lost a home match to a team from outside the British Isles. Ferenc Puskás scored two spectacular goals, while Nándor Hidegkuti scored a hat trick. This victory changed the way football was played and proved that Hungary was the best team in the world at the time. 

Another unforgettable match took place in Budapest in 1954, when Hungary defeated England 7–1. Although it was a home match for Hungary, it confirmed that the Wembley victory had not been a coincidence. This remains England’s heaviest defeat in its history. 

During the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland, Hungary defeated Brazil 4–2 in the quarter finals. Although Hungary lost the 1954 FIFA World Cup Final 3–2 to West Germany in Bern, the match is remembered as one of the biggest upsets in football history. Hungary had been unbeaten for years and had already defeated West Germany 8–3 earlier in the tournament. Despite the defeat, the Golden Team earned worldwide respect and remains one of the greatest national teams of all time.
