Géczy Dávid’s Student Film Selected for American Film Festival

Dávid Geczy’s action packed neo noir short film Dive into the Night (Merülés az éjszakába) is set to make its international debut. The student film, produced as part of the University of Theatre and Film Arts (SZFE) program, has been officially selected for a prestigious international film festival in Indianapolis dedicated to horror, crime, and thriller productions.

The festival is considered one of the United States’ notable genre film events, providing filmmakers from around the world with the opportunity to present their work to both audiences and industry professionals. Being included in the official selection represents significant professional recognition, as the program features films chosen from a highly competitive international field.

The director shared the news on social media, expressing gratitude to everyone involved in the project:

“I would like to thank the actors, every member of the crew, my fellow creators, and everyone who believed in the film even when many said that a project of this scale could not be accomplished within the framework of a student film.”

The short film features several well known Hungarian actors, including Iván Kamarás, Ákos Kőszegi, and Áron Molnár.

The production was created within SZFE’s unique action-directing program, launched under the leadership of Gulyás Buda. The concept for the program was originally proposed by Gábor Piroch, with the goal of enabling students to master the specific techniques and requirements of action filmmaking alongside traditional film education.

The film’s action sequences were choreographed by stunt coordinators György Szántó and Zoltán Szántó, together with young fight master Tran Huu Nguyen. Four CGI studios contributed to the visual effects during post production. The film was shot by cinematographer Ádám Pataki, edited by Attila Leisa, while the sound post production was handled by Bence Bobák. In a rarity for short films, he created a 7.1 Dolby Atmos sound mix for the gunfights and action scenes.

So far, Dive into the Night has been screened in Hungary as part of the official competition program of the 45th Hungarian Film Review. Following its international festival run, the filmmakers aim to bring the film to streaming platforms, allowing a wider audience to discover this unconventional Hungarian action thriller.

At the Indianapolis screenings, audiences will have the opportunity to watch the Hungarian short film alongside productions from around the world, marking another important milestone in its international journey.
