Brutal Hailstorm on Video: Violent Storm Sweeps Across Half the Country

Strong wind gusts also hit the Balaton region

Shocking videos captured Monday’s violent storms and hailstorms as severe weather swept across several parts of Hungary.

Heavy thunderstorms, torrential rain, and hail moved through multiple regions of the country on Monday, causing widespread disruptions in several counties. In many areas, a large amount of rainfall fell within a very short period of time, accompanied by powerful wind gusts and, in some places, hail.

The national meteorological service had already warned earlier that significant thunderstorm activity was expected to develop over Hungary at the beginning of the week. A first level weather warning was issued for the entire country, remaining in effect in several regions even during the evening hours.

Storms and hail strike across the country

Videos and photos of the storm quickly spread across social media. In Debrecen, hailstorms hit the city while a substantial amount of rain fell within a short period. Several streets were flooded almost instantly.

In the area around Algyő, located in Csongrád-Csanád County, intense rainfall also developed, causing temporary inland flooding on agricultural lands. In several locations, the heavy rainfall flooded crops and lower lying areas.

According to information released by HungaroMet, the thunderstorm system gradually moved eastward by the evening, although the risk of severe weather had not completely disappeared. In several regions, the storm cells could still bring strong wind gusts, small sized hail, and intense precipitation.

Meteorologists also warned that stronger thunderstorms could still develop in parts of southeastern Hungary.
