There is an unusually tense silence around the Liverpool FC camp regarding a contract extension for Dominik Szoboszlai. Earlier reports suggested that the captain of the Hungarian national team could sign a new deal with the Reds as early as this spring. However, it is believed that the midfielder and his management are pushing for a significantly improved contract, while the club appears to be delaying negotiations. Some rumors even suggest that Liverpool might consider selling him to Real Madrid as early as this year.
Szoboszlai has been playing for Liverpool since 2023 and is reportedly one of the lowest paid regular starters in the squad. According to speculation, his outstanding performances this season have earned him the right to at least double his salary. Nevertheless, no agreement has been reached so far. What is certain, however, is that a significant portion of the wage bill will be freed up this summer, as two highly paid but aging stars are expected to leave the club: Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.
This, however, does not necessarily guarantee relief for Szoboszlai. Transfer reports suggest that as many as 8–10 players could leave Liverpool after the season. Notably, Szoboszlai’s name appears on that speculative list as well. The 25-year-old playmaker has been admired by Real Madrid for years. Moreover, he may not be the only Hungarian at Liverpool who could be heading to Spain.
